Description from Art History in Focus:
"In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location.
Today we enjoy a walking tour of Lisbon with one of the city's most authoritative and enthusiastic guides, with a focus on different architectural styles, including Renaissance, Baroque and Art Deco. The walk will be different from our previous visits in 2021 as we will explore other areas of the city, so please do join us again if you attended our last session.
SUMMARY: We will start our tour in the José Saramago square, near the Alfama district. Here we see the striking Casa dos Bicos, characterised by the diamond-shaped pyramidal decoration of its façade which is reminiscent of the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. We’ll learn about its striking architecture and understand how the building's function has changed through time, from its Roman origins to its role today as the home of the José Saramago Foundation, dedicated to the literary work of the Portuguese Nobel prize winner. From here we’ll walk along the Tagus River towards the impressive Commerce Square which once housed the palace of the Royal Family, before the earthquake of 1755. Our riverfront stroll will then lead us to the elegant art deco train station and finally the Mercado da Ribeira or traditional food market which is the delight of both locals and travellers.
The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the visit. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION: This is a live event including interactive Q and A starting at 11.00am UK time, lasting one hour. Tune in from anywhere in the world to participate or enjoy a recorded version if you cannot watch live. For those who are unable to participate live, you will automatically be sent a recording soon after the end of the session enabling you to watch on catch up later that evening or the following 2 days. Please note, the recording is only available to those who have not been able to participate live, and it is not possible to purchase a recording after booking has closed.
Booking closes the day before the event is streamed. Please refer to the Further Information panel below."
