"Although his artistic formation happened in Florence, Benozzo Gozzoli spent the majority of his career working beyond its walls, in Lazio, Umbria and across Tuscany. His remarkable fresco cycle for the chapel of the Palazzo Medici Riccardi is the crowning achievement of a five-year period when Benozzo returned to Florence. Less well-known is the commission that he undertook soon after to paint an altarpiece for the youth confraternity of the Purification, who had their headquarters at the newly renovated convent of San Marco. This lecture examines how the altarpiece was a key moment in Gozzoli’s career, when his ties to the ruling Medici clan were at their strongest.
The lecture coincides with a forthcoming exhibition at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi which will explore Benozzo Gozzoli in the context of Renaissance Florence (Benozzo Gozzoli e la Cappella dei Magi – 16th December 2021 - 15th March 2022 at Palazzo Medici Riccardi – curated by Serena Nocentini & Valentina Zucchi)..."
