Description from Art History in Focus:
"Join curator Dr Jennifer Sliwka as she introduces us to her new exhibition, Reframed: The Woman in the Window, opening at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in May.
Reframed: The Woman in the Window is the first exhibition to explore this enigmatic and provocative artistic motif that has been used for over 3,000 years. In employing a window to frame and present a woman to us, artists also dramatise ways of seeing and being seen. Historically, most of these artworks were made by men for men, showing a woman enclosed within a window, suggesting idealisation, protection or confinement. In many cases, her identity remains unknown, leading to centuries of speculation and potential misunderstanding. More recently, female artists have taken up the composition to explore ideas of identity, sexuality, psychology, and social convention. Part of the enduring appeal of the ‘woman in the window’ motif is its openness to interpretation: it often implicates us in a narrative, inviting us to consider the woman, the space she inhabits, and our relationship to her through our own lens.
This show will feature a range of media including sculpture, painting, print, photography and film and will identify the key geographic locations, cultures and time periods for which the ‘woman in the window’ had a particular meaning and why. Taking Dulwich Picture Gallery’s own Girl at a Window (1645) by Rembrandt as its initial point of inspiration, the exhibition features artworks ranging from ancient civilisations to the present day, bringing together over 40 works by artists including Sandro Botticelli, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, David Hockney, Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman, Wolfgang Tillmans and Rachel Whiteread.
This is a live-streamed, interactive lecture which will be given by Dr Sliwka at 6.00pm (UK time). Tune in from anywhere in the world to watch or enjoy a recorded version of the lecture which can be accessed for up to 2 days afterwards. It will last approximately one hour including Q&A. For those who are unable to participate live, you will automatically be sent a recording soon after the end of the session. Please note, the recording is only available to those who have not been able to participate live, and it is not possible to purchase a recording after booking has closed. Bookings close the day before the event is streamed.
