"Every image is a kaleidoscope of a different moment in time and a different artist's reaction to the world around them. Every subject can be represented in completely different ways: for the printmaker Hokusai, water was a fabric of swirl patterns, for Leon Kosoff it was a noisy, splashing of rough charcoal marks and in a Fan Kuan’s ink drawings of Chinese mountains the stream is the peaceful, untouched white of the page itself. Could visual patterns be the global currency of world imagery?...Each week on this course we will consider a distinct challenge: how might we draw our memories, our conversations, our bodies, our imaginings? Through examining artworks from different times and cultures we will engage with a multitude of styles and individual attempts as answering some of these universal questions..."
