"Post World War II there was a new use of gardens with chairs to lounge in, pools to swim in and decks to barbeque on. These gardens were an extra room to the home, to live in and enjoy. In the 50’s optimism could be found in design, design mixed with technological advances. Homes making the most of daylight and fresh air, with glass everywhere, blending the landscape into indoor and outdoor living. Gardens were now taking part in the Modernist ideal and were ‘Machines for the modern age’...In this new course we track the influence of the Modernist designers and writers; Tunnard, Eckbo, Kiley, Halprin, Church and the California school to Copacabana beach and beyond. The landscapes of Roberto Burle Marx in Brazil, Pietro Porcinai in Italy, in Japan Mirei Shigemori, to Mexico and the colourful work of Luis Barragán. In America the use of abstract space in the work of Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, Charles and Ray Eames picnicked in a field and fell “in love with the meadow”, they built their house there and designed it to fit into the landscape. In England Geoffrey Jellicoe takes us into the space age with his sputnik inspired roof terrace..."
