AAL Art Awards Shortlist, 2021: Joost van den Bergh

Joost van den Bergh, of Joost van den Bergh, presents their shortlisted piece for the Apollo Award for Outstanding East Asian Work of Art from a Dealer - a Bamboo Object by Tomonori Nakamura, made in 2019. Nakamura Tomonori (b. 1965, Obihiro City, Hokkaido) came to bamboo making after a career as an IT engineer. He studied bamboo art at a small school on Sado Island in 2010 and chose to concentrate on sculptural bamboo making. Interested in mathematical and geometric forms, he studied under the Honma Hidaki (b. 1959). Tomonori started to show his work at the local and regional art competitions whilst still a student and won several local and regional awards, such as the UX Niigata Broadcasting 21 Prize at Japan Modern Arts Niigata Exhibition (2012 and 2013). After graduating from the Sado in 2013 he exhibited at National art competitions and exhibited at the prestigious Nitten exhibition in 2013, winning several awards in Japan in 2014.
