ASIAN ART IN LONDON
AAL Art Awards Shortlist, 2021: Grosvenor Gallery
VIDEO DESCRIPTION
Connor Macklin, owner and director of the Grosvenor Gallery, presents the Grosvenor Gallery's shortlisted piece for the Apollo Award for Outstanding East Asian Work of Art from a Dealer - a painting of a tiger by Senaka Senanayake. Born in 1951, Senaka Senanayake is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known artists. His brightly-hued canvases of the country’s flora and fauna draw attention to its rapidly depleting rainforests. His recent work is inspired by the plight of the Sri Lankan rainforests, many of which have been subject to intense deforestation to make way for tea plantations. Senaka comments; "My main focus is on the endangered flora and fauna in our rainforests. In 2005 I visited a rainforest in Sri Lanka, which became my muse for many of my shows." When discussing his work the artist comments "I could have shown the negative aspects of destruction, such as people and animals dying, but I try to do happy positive paintings." This particular painting depicts a Tiger in its natural habitat, but has underlying comments on the destruction of the Tigers habitat due to deforestation.
