Description from Art History in Focus:
"In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location. Today we enjoy a walking tour of Cannaregio led by one of the city’s most authoritative and enthusiastic guides, with a focus on hidden gardens and horticulture in Venice.
Most of the gardens in Venice can be described as secret, hidden wonders. In fact there is no better description of these hidden and improbable horticultural jewels, found on marshland which is rich in salt, located in a city where there was no fresh water until the late 19th century. We will try to understand the expertise of Venetians in the past when designing gardens and in particular we will explore the northern section of Venice, Cannaregio, where gardens like the Rizzo Patarol can be admired in all their splendour. This garden, near the Madonna dell’Orto, was created in the 18th century by Lorenzo Patarol, a learned renowned collector and botanist who also wrote a herbarium of over a thousand exotic plants.
Our live, guided walking tour will be led by Dr Luisella Romeo, one of the city’s most authoritative and popular guides. All bookings will include a donation / “virtual entrance ticket” to the gardens visited.
The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the visit. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience."
