Description from Art History in Focus:
"Peter Paul Rubens was one of the most popular, successful and highly-paid artists in 17th century Europe. Spanning a wide variety of genres from lyrical landscapes and fleshy nudes to rich mythological canvases and powerful altarpieces, his paintings were coveted by some of the most distinguished and powerful patrons, yet his early works show little of the sophistication that we associate with his more mature work. How was a boy from a relatively modest upbringing able to rise to such heights of fame and fortune? This lecture traces the development of the young painter from his training in Antwerp to the time he spent in cities such as Venice, Mantua, Florence and Rome, focussing in particular on the seminal impact of Italian art on his work. Rubens’ exposure to the paintings and sculptures of these cities would come to represent a critical turning point in his career, and the work of figures such as Titian, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo would continue to influence his work on his return to the Netherlands and for the rest of his career.
This is a live-streamed lecture which will be given by Siân Walters at 6.00pm (UK time). Tune in from anywhere in the world to watch or enjoy a recorded version of the lecture which can be accessed for up to 2 days afterwards. It will last approximately one hour including Q&A. For those who are unable to participate live, you will automatically be sent a recording soon after the end of the session. Please note, the recording is only available to those who have not been able to participate live, and it is not possible to purchase a recording after booking has closed.
Bookings close the day before the event is streamed."
